CHAPTER III - APPRAISAL REPORTS OF MAJOR PROJECTS/PROGRAMMES
WORLD BANK AIDED INDUSTRIAL POLLUTIONCONTROL & PREVENTION PROJECTS (PHASE-I&II).
(1) World Bank Aided Industrial Pollution Control Project-Phase 1 1992-97
The World Bank Aided Industrial Pollution Control Project had been prepared to prevent and alleviate environmental degradation caused by industrial operations. The project involves a line of credit of US $ 155.6 million and counterpart fund of US$ 108 million to be vided by GOI, State Governments, Financial institutions,(IDBI & JCICI) and by industrial units availing the loan. The components of the projects are as follows:
a) Investment component b) Institutional Development component
(II) World Bank Aided Industrial Pollution Prevention Project Phase 11,1995-2001
The total outlay of the project is US $ 330 millions. The objective of the project is to promote cost-effective Pollution abatement from industrial sources. The specific goals are:
i) to strengthen four State Pollution Control Boards.
ii) facilitate priority investments dedicated to prevent pollution from industrial sources.
(iii) provide technical assistance
NATIONAL RIVER CONSERVATION DIRECTORATE
The evaluation of the Ganga Action Plan Phase I by experts concluded. The reduction of discharge of organic matter has been achieved to a fair level and will be implemented as an appropriate programme for replication in other river basins also. The other findings have been ;ncorporated in the propos~ds of Ganga Action Plan Phase 11 and National River Conservation Plan.
Promotion of Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP)
This scheme has been designed to assist in setting up of Common Effluent Treatment Plants for clusters of small scale units. Financial assistance under this scheme is provided as follows:
Environmental Epidemiology
Environmental Epidemiological Studies which is a component under the assistance for abatement of pollution started in 1991 to make studies of the impact of 4ndustrial pollution on the health of the human being.
