The Minister of Environment & Forests today announced a series
of measures to strengthen the scientific base underlying the
activities of the Ministry including a global advisory network,
a fellowship programme, an action plan for forestry sciences,
a committee to revamp the scientific capacity in the Ministry,
and a research programme on climate change. Announcing these
initiatives, Minister Jairam Ramesh said, “This Ministry was
conceived as a scientific ministry, a mission which has got
somewhat diluted. With these initiatives, we aim to ensure that
science is brought back into the mainstream of our work.”
A
two day high-level conference on "Climate
Change: Technology Development and Transfer"
hosted by India and UN-DESA successfully concluded
today with the adoption of the Delhi Statement
on Global Cooperation on Climate Technology. An
international exhibition on climate technologies
was also organised at the sidelines of the conference.
The
National Capital Territory of Delhi has announced
an action plan comprising 65 specific actions
to address climate change as part of the State's
development policy framework by 2012. Mr. Jairam
Ramesh, India's Environment Minister and Mrs.
Sheila Dikshit, Delhi's Chief Minister, jointly
released this agenda, which is aligned with the
country's National Action Plan on Climate Change.
India
and China have signed an agreement to enhance
cooperation on climate change between the two
countries. A joint workshop was also held to discuss
the National Action Plans of both countries on
climate change.
This
report presents the results of five rigorous modelling
studies estimating India's GHG emissions profile.
All studies show that India's emissions will remain
very modest even two decades from today.
India is an active participant
in international negotiations on climate
change and has submitted several concrete
proposals for action. This publication
encapsulates the submissions made by
India to the UNFCCC during 2008 and
2009.
The National Action Plan
on Climate Change identifies measures
that promote India's development objectives
while also yielding co-benefits for
addressing climate change effectively.
The Ministers of the four BASIC Group countries - China, Brazil,
South Africa and India - met in New Delhi today and called for
an early resumption of the climate negotiations through the
two negotiating groups - (AWG-LCA and the AWG-KP). They called
for the early flow of the pledged $10bn by developed countries
in 2010. The Ministers agreed to work closely on climate change
negotiations and climate change science amongst themselves and
with the G-77.

Minister flags off Nationwide BT Brinjal Consultations

The Environment Minister, Mr. Jairam Ramesh chaired the first in a series of nationwide consultations on the issue of BT Brinjal at Kolkata. Organised by the MoEF and CEE this consultation aims at giving the public a forum where meaningful debate on the issue can take place before a final decision on the introduction of BT Brinjal is taken.
The National Tiger Conservation Authority in association with TRAFFIC-India has launched an online tiger crime database. The website will also provide a compilation of authentic records on the mortality of tigers and other key wildlife species across India.

Blueprint for strengthening BSI and

A Task Force appointed by the Ministry and headed by Prof Madhav Gadgil has made far reaching recommendations for the strengthening of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI). It is hoped that these recommendations, along with investments being made in the institutes' renewal, will enable them continue being at the cutting edge of India’s biodiversity taxonomy and conservation efforts.
Pollution Index for Major Industrial Clusters Released

The Ministry and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) today released a study that for the first time calculates a Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI) for 88 key industrial clusters in India, using a series of objective criteria. Minister Jairam Ramesh, while releasing the report prepared by IIT Delhi, emphasized that the assessment must serve as a basis for enhanced and urgent action, especially in those clusters that are critically polluted.
